With the simple and unconditional way of being and loving, dogs inspire us daily. Therefore, man’s best friends could not be absent from artistic creations and songs about dogs. Many singers and songwriters dedicated special songs to the dogs that marked their lives.

Martha My Dear  – The Beatles / Paul McCartney

Martha My Dear  is a song that is part of the historical record of the  Beatles  called  White Album , released in 1968. The band ‘s fans know that music is an integral composition of Paul McCartney; but  few people know that it was composed in honor of their dog Martha, of the bobtail breed.

Some people interpret it as a love song for a woman. However, the lyrics really speak to the Liverpool artist’s precious bond with her best friend Martha.

I love my dog  – Cat Stevens

Cat Stevens is better known to younger generations as Yusuf Islam. The British artist has composed a wide range of his own songs; with very private messages. But in  I love my dogCat simply and directly declares her love for her childhood best friend.

This song is on the first  single  released by Cat in 1966; with melody inspired by a song by Yusef Lateef. To this day, it  ‘s one of the sweetest and most recognizable songs about dogs in the history  of music.

Seamus  – Pink Floyd / David Gilmour

Seamus was the beloved pet of Steve Marriot, who was a good friend of David Gilmour. Apparently, the artist was so happy with the dog that he composed a special song; called  Seamus . But the story doesn’t end there; because Gilmour also included Seamus’ grunts in his composition.

The result was immortalized in  Meddle , Pink Floyd ‘s historic 1971 album. It’s a very original blues , with the unprecedented participation of the handsome collie named Seamus. Unfortunately, the music received harsh criticism from the entertainment industry.

In the historic album  Led Zeppelin III , released in 1970, Robert Plant interprets and dedicates this song to his dog Strider. In his lyrics, the British artist recounts some beautiful moments shared with his canine partner. And he claims that this relationship is a   pure friendship that no one could ever replace.

Another curiosity is that the name Strider is a reference to Aragorn; one of the main characters in the saga  The Lord of the Rings . A small detail that shows that Plant is possibly a fan of Tolkien’s creation.

Laika  – Mecano / Nacho Cano

The unforgettable story of the dog Laika, the first living being to be sent into space. She is honored in this song by Mecano. Nacho Cano composed it in the 80s, having the dog as an example of courage and; at the same time, of vulnerability.

Old King  – Neil Young

Old King  is a beautiful country/folk song that Neil Young composed for his dog Elvis. After your best friend’s death; the artist dedicates these beautiful lyrics to remembering the best  moments shared. Interestingly, Young was so attached to the dog Elvis that he used to take him on all of his tours around the world.

Puter  – Andrés Lewin

Perhaps unknown to many, Lewin is a brilliant Argentine singer who has given us beautiful   original compositions.  In  Puter; the artist tells us about the complex man/animal duality  in simple and very delicate lyrics.

The song is on Andrés Lewis’ posthumous album,  A sadness from the Milky Way;  released in March 2016. Unfortunately, the artist died two months before his work received rave reviews.

Sometimes I don’t mind  – The Suicide Machines

On their third studio album, released in 2000,  The Suicide Machine features this song dedicated to a Boston Terrier breed. Your lyrics talk about some of your dog’s adventures, which certainly we all also live with our pets every day. But as this song about dogs says; we just cannot be so tenderly irritated.

In addition, the Boston Terrier puppy also participated in the recording of this song. At the end of the original version; we hear the dog expressing himself in full punk pop rhythm.
