The 5 Breeds Of Hairless Dogs

The 5 breeds of hairless dogs

Hairless  dogs are those dogs that, for genetic reasons, do not have a huge coat or that only have some parts of their body. This characteristic could have been very harmful to the dog’s existence, as the coat allows for a series of benefits, protecting it from the weather and diseases. And, therefore, it is of paramount importance for survival.

However, as this ends up facilitating coexistence in the houses, since there is no change of coat, this anomaly ended up becoming a very appreciated feature in Western cultures.

The 5 hairless dog breeds are the Xoloitzcuintle, Peruvian Peeled Dog, Argentinian Pila, American Staffordshire Terrier and Chinese Crested Dog.

Xoloitzcuintle is one of the hairless dogs

This dog has origins in Mexico and its complicated name means “dog of the God Xolotl”, who was the Aztec god of spirits, fire and bad luck.

The Aztecs raised it to eat it, however, other cultures used it as a healer dog, in the sense that they kept it close to alleviate illnesses.

This dog belongs to an active, lively and affectionate breed with a personality very similar to the Fox Terrier, although its physical characteristics remind the Lebréu.

The Mexican hairless dog has a miniature variation, which is much more common than the standard size and far more popular in both the United States and Mexico.

This version, however, is not recognized by breeder clubs and cannot participate in dog shows.

However, this dog is an excellent companion animal and is used in breeding programs to ensure the health and vigor of the breed.

Your skin requires special attention to remain supple and healthy. Their colors range from charcoal to slate to bronze.

Like the Mexican hairless dog we just met, the Peruvian Peeled Dog was originally bred to be eaten.

It was of the same breed as the Inca dog, however, with a different skin color. In time, it went from being food to being the nobility’s favorite pet.

The Peruvian Pelado Dog has three varieties : small, medium and large, and can weigh, depending on its size, between 4 and 25 kilos.

The Argentinian Pila Dog

Without leaving Latin America, we find another breed also very similar to the previous ones, but originating from Argentina.

The peculiarity of the Argentino Pila is that the only regions where it has hair are on the head and tail, and the hair has a  crest shape.

This breed is not one of the biggest, like the Peruvian Peeled Dog, and dogs can be found in three sizes: small, medium and large.

The breed has a cheerful, dynamic and playful temperament, which makes them excellent companion puppies.

These dogs are very comfortable living in a house and are taught very easily. They were once in danger of extinction, however, now, it is being monitored so that it does not go into extinction.

American Staffordshire Terrier

The American Starrodshire Terrier is a small breed,  originating in the United States and weighing less than 7kg. It is relatively new, as the first litters appeared in the 1980s.

As it has no hair and has a patchy skin, it is a highly sought after breed and its adoption is very difficult, since there is not much availability.

Being descendants of the Rat Terrier, American Staffordshire Terriers are active, dynamic and playful dogs that get along very well with children. What’s more, they’re very smart and good for families.

The downside is that because the skin is so unprotected, this type of dog needs very specific care so that it doesn’t get hurt.

The Chinese Crested Dog is one of the most exotic hairless dogs

The Chinese Crested Dog is a small dog weighing between 5kg and 7kg and has two varieties: one with (powderpuff) and one without (hairless), because baldness in this breed is an incomplete dominant gene.

This means that in its hairless variant its skin is smooth and has streaks of hair on its legs, head and tail.

The Chinese Crested Dog is a pleasant, sensitive and cheerful dog. He is quite happy, playful and agile, although he can be a little stubborn.

He is very loyal to other dogs and clings to a particular person, gets along very well with humans, dogs and other pets, despite being quite shy.

Dogs of this breed are intelligent, easy to train and perfect for companionship, even though they need constant monitoring.
