How should we act with a newly arrived kitten at home?

On other occasions we’ve talked about adopting cats and the advantages of adopting an adult cat. But we also want to talk about how we should act if we make the decision to adopt a kitten, in this case a puppy.

We always advise that before adopting a pet, that we weigh the pros and cons, since we are talking about a living being and not a “toy” and that it will need all our attention and affection. So we’re going to give you some simple advice on how to act with a newly arrived kitten at home.

At what age can we take a kitten home?

Once we’ve decided to adopt a kitten, we want to get it home as soon as possible, but that’s not recommended. It would be convenient for kittens to stay with their mother and siblings for at least 12 weeks. Keep in mind that Mom will teach the kitten to be a cat, not us.

The first few weeks are when the kitten needs the most from its feline family, even a cat can nurse for up to 10 weeks of life. If you separate it before 12 weeks, it could lead to stress in the cat, behavior problems and even illness.

Once the separation between the kitten and its feline family takes place, at first it will feel disoriented, so the care and attitude of the members of its new home will be very important. The whole family must be aware that this is a baby creature and that it will need a lot of basic care.

It is important to prepare the home for the arrival of the new baby in the house, the room temperature is also very important, neither cold nor heat, but mainly cold should be avoided, as it could cause hypothermia.

You should also provide him with a comfortable bed where he can rest comfortably and that is placed in a place where there is no draft and that is warm. If he has already weaned and no longer takes breast milk, it is essential that he already put the litter box for him to do his needs.

Remember that the kitten, in addition, will need pampering and basic care, which you will have to provide. He also has to clean him, since he doesn’t have his mommy to do it anymore, in addition to providing him with the correct and necessary food for his age.

As soon as the kitten arrives at your house, you will have to define a place where to put its food, water and a place where it will do its needs. You will have to place a sandbox and change it periodically.

It is very important that you also provide him with a scraper for his nails, so that he will avoid sharpening them with any furniture or objects in the house. Buy some toys to distract him.

The health

Once he has had his first contact with the home and family members, you will need to take him to the vet to have him checked. You will have to check that it does not have external or internal parasites, as this could infect other animals at home and even children.

It is also important that you check your eyes and ears to rule out mites. If you have any questions, it is better to consult your veterinarian, also regarding the food that your small pet should follow.

The rules since childhood

Don’t make the mistake of not teaching your cat what’s right and what’s not, just because he’s a baby, later it will be more difficult. You have to make it clear to your kitten what can’t be done, and if he does something he shouldn’t do, sprinkle him with water so it’s clear to him that it shouldn’t be done again.

Don’t let him do his chores around, for that he has his sandbox. You should also reward him if he does something correctly. A very important point in the education of a cat is patience , he will not obey you from the beginning, but with time he will end up following the rules.

Don’t give up if the puppy’s adaptation takes a while, you’ll have to be patient and understand that he was separated from his mom and siblings, that he’s in a strange place and with people he doesn’t know, so it’s up to you to earn your trust and affection.
