Catalburun: All About This Turkish Dog Breed

Dogs never cease to amaze us, and there is always a new breed we don’t know about yet. Today, we want to talk about the breed that characterizes the “double nosed dogs”: the catalburun.

What You Should Know About Catalburun

Source

Its name is composed of two Turkish words: catal, which means “fork”, and  burun,  which means “nose”. He comes from Turkey and, as we said before, his nose is one of his most impressive features. He seems to have two, though that doesn’t give him any extra abilities.

There is not much evidence to confirm its origin and the trajectory that led it to become a race, although there is a theory that seems to be widely accepted.

It is believed that these dogs were part of the Roman Empire and that they were the faithful companions of Roman soldiers when they went into battle. This shouldn’t surprise us, as this breed makes up the molossos group, excellent trackers.

On the other hand, they are said to be the result of a cross between molossos from Assyria, molossos from Rome and those from England.

The Romans wanted perfect dogs to take care of their herds. Therefore, they chose three of the races they knew and considered ideal for this purpose, and mixed them until they obtained the catalburun.

Characteristics of catalburun

The catalburun is a large dog,  can weigh about 25 kilos and measure up to 50 centimeters in height. It features strong edges and a powerful appearance.

His ears are long, but without a doubt the most representative of his face is the double nose, which, despite not giving any special powers to his sense of smell, makes him have a friendly face.

Its fur is short and  its color usually has brown tones, although we can also find tricolors, combined with black and white, for example. His round eyes and drooping eyelids give him that noble look that indicates you’re up against a loving, lovable dog.

They look like a hunting dog, an activity they are still used for today, although their face is more like a bloodhound. Interestingly,  their nose is less olfactory than dogs that only have one nose.

race personality

Although hunting dogs tend to be independent and solitary, if you take a dog of this breed and socialize it properly, you will have a loyal, friendly and affectionate animal, even with children.

He is patient and persevering, essential qualities for living in a family  and defending it. They are agile and quick, which is another indication, in addition to their size, that they will need a lot of exercise. They are animals that do not adapt well to small spaces.

Catalburun care

Their physical strength reflects their inner strength very well, so these animals don’t usually have specific diseases that affect the breed. Their life expectancy varies between 12 and 14 years.

Its fur, being short, does not need specific care, apart from a weekly brushing that helps to eliminate dead hair.

Their ears, because of their length and sagging, can become a focus for parasites and other disease-causing insects. To avoid this, nothing better than a deep clean at least two or three times a week.

Finally, as we mentioned before, physical exercise is essential to preserve the good health and strength of this dog’s joints and muscular system.

Do you think the catalburun is the ideal dog for you? In this case, it is worth adopting one who is looking for a new home. In it you will find a faithful and loyal friend and a good companion to live with as a family.
