Raising A Dog: How Do You Make Him Answer Your Call?

How many times have you called your dog until he was hoarse without him answering you? The good behavior of our adult dog will be the result of good education. The key for our dog to obey when he is an adult is good training as a puppy.

But if your pet is already big and you’re tired of him not coming when you call him, we’ll give you some advice for your dog to answer your call.

Advice on how to raise a dog

Before starting our process of how to make him answer his call, we want to give you some basic advice, which serves to educate a dog at home. You have to make him understand that at home there are some rules and that he must follow them.

From four months of age you can start educating your dog, from this moment on, training must be constant and you need to be very patient. The first order he must always obey is to heed his call.

You can use short, clear and concise words like “come”, but remember to always use the same word for the same order.

This order should always be accompanied by body language, some gesture that makes it clear to the dog what you intend. You should not forget to reward your dog when he has obeyed, it is very important that he knows that he has done the task well and that you are rewarding him for it.

You must be firm with the rules, if, for example, you do not want your dog to ask for food while you are at the table, you must always maintain the same posture and not give in to your request. If he senses weakness on your part, you will never be able to establish this rule.

All people who live in the same house must act in the same way and have clear orders for different situations.

Educate dog to answer your call

The first thing a dog must learn is to respond to his call, this is fundamental for his education and to free him from certain dangers, such as escaping and being run over by a car, or getting lost when taking a walk.

Training should start at home, in a place where there are no distractions. Show your dog the prize, it can be a treat or your favorite toy, step away from the dog and call him with the word “come”, as soon as he answers say “yes”, and when he arrives give him the prize. You should repeat this process several times until you get him to answer your call without showing you the prize.

The look

It is very important that your dog gets used to looking at you, this is so you can earn his trust. Every time you talk to your dog, or give him orders, he should look at you.

You can do a very simple game to get him to look at you, is to put his favorite toy right in front of you and not allow him to touch it, he will just look at the toy, but then he will look you in the eye to ask for it.

This exercise should be daily and don’t forget to reward him every time he looks at you.

You need to create a good working environment between you and your dog, it’s not allowed to yell or get angry, not to mention that, as we would say to a child, “you can’t hit”. If your dog doesn’t answer your call, you shouldn’t lose your temper.

This training should be nurturing and your dog should feel relaxed so that he or she  sees the situation as a game, not a punishment.
